Specialist in gynecology and obstetrics
Education and experience:
In 1960 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy of Warsaw. He received two degrees of specialization – in obstetrics (1965) and gynecological diseases (1969). He received the academic degree of MD PhD in 1965 and defended his habilitation thesis in 1972. He obtained the title of associate professor in 1979, full professor in 1990, and on 20th December 2004 was granted the title of doctor honoris causa of the Medical University of Bialystok. In the years 1972–1984 he was Head of the Department of Gynecological Endocrinology of the Medical Academy of Bialystok. In the years 1984–2000, he was the Head of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Medical Academy of Bialystok. In the years 1975–1981, he was the Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs and Postgraduate Education of the Medical Academy of Bialystok and, since 1984, he has been the Head of the Department of Gynecology of the Medical Academy of Bialystok (after the change of the statute the name was changed to the Medical University of Bialystok). In 1987, as the first person in Poland, he performed a successful in vitro fertilization that resulted in childbirth.
He has written 170 scientific publications in Poland and abroad; he is also a co-author of several medical textbooks. He received many honors and awards, such as the Knight’s Cross, Officer’s Cross and Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Medal of the Commission of National Education, the title of Bialystok Citizen of the Year 1988 awarded by the newspaper Kurier Poranny, third place in the contest of Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, the title of the Bialystok Citizen of the 20th Century of Bialystok Radio and Television and Busola 2003 (awarded by the editors of Przegląd newspaper).
